Client: Orla and Pat
Location: Wanstead
Style: Industrial, bold, sociable
Project Brief
Orla and Pat wanted to reimagine their kitchen space, which previously felt cluttered and disconnected. The original layout tried to do too much, with a sofa, a small dining table, and limited usable kitchen area. The goal was to design a cohesive, atmospheric and functional space for everyday use and entertaining.
Design Collaboration
Both clients brought strong ideas and creative energy to the project. With backgrounds in media and construction, Orla and Pat had a clear vision and a collaborative mindset. Pat, the main cook, wanted the kitchen to support serious cooking and easy hosting. Orla was inspired by moody, industrial Shoreditch bars and wanted the design to reflect that character while remaining practical.
Key Features and Solutions
Durable, moody finishes: A black laminate door edged in oak was selected for its scratch resistance (ideal for their excitable spaniel) and dark aesthetic.
Maximised storage: Tall cabinetry runs to the ceiling to keep worktops clear, catering to the couple’s admission that they aren’t the tidiest.
Hidden breakfast zone: A compact sink area is paired with a bi-fold “breakfast cupboard” to conceal morning mess – including kettle, toaster and cereals – at a moment’s notice.
Sociable cooking layout: The hob was placed opposite a large TV for Pat’s enjoyment and faces the dining area for easy conversation while cooking. A generous island supports prep work.
Integrated dining: A reclaimed timber table seating ten makes the space perfect for gatherings.
Material palette: Black cabinetry, oak accents, a natural timber table and concrete-effect quartz worktops complete the atmospheric, industrial aesthetic.
The Result
A year on, the space continues to have a meaningful impact on the clients’ daily life. It is practical, personal, and effortlessly sociable – a space where even the teenagers enjoy spending time.
